Lightweight aggregate is the construction material that has a bulk density lower than common construction aggregates. It is used in the production of lightweight concrete products such as structural concrete, concrete block, and pavement. Lightweight aggregate-based concretes manufactured using IGCC (integrated gasification combined cycle) by-products as well as from the natural materials.  The lightweight aggregate is produced from materials such as shale, clay, or slate. Aggregates can also be made from fly ash by sintering and pelletizing in an oven, which gives the required size and can be used to prepare lightweight concrete with a high compressive strength. Blast furnace slag, perlite, natural pumice, and vermiculite can be used as substitutes. The lightweight aggregate concrete, walls, structural lightweight concrete slabs, and beams are considered to have more significant fire-endurance periods than other types of concrete.

For the production of lightweight aggregate, the raw material (excluding pumice) is expanded to about twice the original volume of the raw material, to yield the lighter concrete product. The lightweight aggregate comes in the variety of shape such as rounded, cubical, angular, or of any other form. The texture and shape of these aggregates can directly affect its workability and the concrete. The construction industry requires a compressive strength level to be 3000-5000 psi to design precast or prestressed concrete. The concrete made up of these aggregates is also known to absorb very little water and can maintain a low density than that of ordinary concrete.  Due to its various advantages and properties, the demand for lightweight aggregate concrete has been growing immensely.
