The energy source is liquefied petroleum gas, diesel, or hydrogen (for fuel cells) and transmission is electric, direct mechanical, or hydrostatic. The use of hybrid train can reduce energy consumption and locomotive exhaust emissions while providing an adequate or equitable amount of power to operate trains.

Hybrid locomotives use a combination of electricity and diesel stored in on-board batteries to power their loads.
